Welcome to the webpage of the FLR project.

The FLR library is a collection of tools in the R statistical language that facilitates the construction of bio-economic simulation models of fisheries and ecological sytems. It is a generic toolbox, but is specifically suited for the construction of simulation models for evaluations of fisheries management strategies. The FLR library is under development by researchers accross a number of laboratories and universities.

A main issue in the dynamics of mixed fisheries is that of technical interactions, leading to incidental catch and discarding. Technical interactions largely depend on the allocation of fishing effort between métiers and fishing grounds which in turn is tightly linked to economic conditions and to the expected profitability of alternative options for fishing effort allocation. We developed a bioeconomic fishery model to investigate these issues, and in particular to explore the possibilities of …

[R Scripts]

Harvest Control Rules (HCR) are modelled using the fwd method on FLStock objects; projections also require specification of a stock recruitment realtionship, which can be provided by FLSR.

Using fwd with FLStock allows a variety of harvest control rules to be modelled, while use with FLBiol and FLFleet allows a variety of simulation models to be constructed.

Stock Assessment

An example of running a Virtual Population Analysis (VPA) based upon Extended Survivors Analysis (XSA) a commonly used stock assessment method by ICES.

To perform a VPA based stock assessment requires catch-at-age data and auxillary information typically information on trends in population size e.g. based on abundance indices obtained from surveys and standardised CPUE series.
